BC’s police watchdog is investigating the death of a woman who fell from a ninth floor balcony in Surrey, shortly before 12:30 pm on Tuesday.

According to police, the incident took place in the 14000 block of 103A Avenue, when officers were called to an apartment complex for reports of a woman on a balcony who wanted to end her life.

Upon their arrival, officers “made multiple attempts to make contact with the individual and entered the building,” police said.

The woman ultimately fell from the balcony, and “immediately was given immediate emergency medical treatment,” but was declared deceased on scene.

Following her death, the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) was notified and is investigating “to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the woman’s death.”

Police said that now that the matter is now under investigation by the IIO BC, no further information will be released by police.
