Vancouver Whitecaps star Thomas Müller and his wife have split

Thomas Müller has, by all accounts, been enjoying his time in Vancouver.

The Vancouver Whitecaps are one of the best teams in the MLS, and Müller has taken that leadership role to heart. He has also embraced the fans and the city, touring multiple locations around the province.

However, one thing has been missing for Müller since arriving in Vancouver last August: his wife, Lisa.

After joining the Whitecaps last summer, Müller told the German publication, Bild, that Lisa would stay in Germany to continue her own profession.

Lisa works as a professional dressage horse rider. She also manages a stable of horses south of Munich in the Bavaria region, while working in horse breeding as well.

However, it appears as though the 8,500 kilometres of distance between them was too much to handle.

Bild reported on Wednesday that the couple is now separated.

“The couple separated amicably some time ago,” Christian Schertz, the couple’s media lawyer, told Bild. “No further statements will be made. I ask that you respect the privacy of my clients and refrain from further inquiries.”

Fans had been speculating for nearly two years prior to Müller joining the Whitecaps that the couple was planning on separating. Some fans online noticed that Lisa had removed pictures with Thomas from her Instagram page. In fact, the oldest post on her page currently is from October 2025.

Tuned-in soccer fans probably weren’t surprised that Lisa didn’t accompany Müller to Vancouver. Back in 2015, a transfer from Bayern Munich to Manchester United reportedly fell through because Lisa was unwilling to move to England from Germany.

Thomas and Lisa Müller were married for nearly 17 years, getting hitched back in December 2009. The couple, who were born just eight days apart, got married at the age of 20.

While separation is always sombre, there’s an argument to be made that the fun-loving, affable Müller may now be Vancouver’s most eligible bachelor.
