The Vancouver Whitecaps are currently playing at an unprecedented level.
And while 2025 has been a season to remember on the pitch already, the signing of 35-year-old German superstar Thomas Müller from Bayern Munich has easily been the biggest in the club’s history.
“The media interactions and also the social media followers and interactions have gone to numbers that we have never seen before, not even in the time where we were interacting with Alphonso [Davies]. So yes, it’s all great, and it’s all a wonderful thing for everyone at this club,” Whitecaps CEO and chairman Axel Schuster told the media today.
Having played his whole professional career in the German Bundesliga, the 2014 World Cup winner is excited for a new start.

“The city is nice… [I heard] it’s the best city in the world,” Müller added.
The Whitecaps are also setting records in the merchandising department, with Müller jerseys flying off the shelves pretty much anywhere someone can get their hands on one.
“I can tell you that there is a great buzz around the club since the moment we officially announced it. We had a record sale day in our fan shop here. We have never sold so many jerseys in such a short time,” Schuster added. “Our ticket sales for all the remaining home games in the regular season have spiked, and [the] game on the weekend will be sold out.”
Müller is expected to make his debut at home this weekend against the Houston Dynamos at BC Place on Saturday.
“I was used to playing football, now I’m playing soccer,” Müller joked.
Arriving in Vancouver overnight to a mob of rabid fans, Müller should have a few training sessions with his new teammates before he’s ready for action this weekend.
“I want to be on the pitch as soon as possible. That’s why I’m here,” Müller said.
