Whitecaps kickoff 2016 season at home against Montreal on March 6

Next season’s Vancouver Whitecaps FC home opener won’t be devoid of intrigue, as an old rival is coming to town.

The club announced today that the Montreal Impact will visit BC Place on March 6 to kickoff the season. The MLS releases the dates for home openers before the rest of the schedule, so we will have to wait before we get the full slate of games. The Caps will play Kansas City in their home opener the following week, on March 12.

The Whitecaps and Impact met three times last season, splitting the games evenly with a win, a loss, and a tie. The Caps’ only win over Montreal (2-0) was in the deciding game of the Amway Canadian Championship, to take home their first Voyageurs Cup.

The MLS has the longest season of all North American professional team sports. The MLS Cup was played on December 6. The Whitecaps play their first preseason game on February 3.
