The Vancouver Whitecaps took to the pitch on Sunday afternoon against the Houston Dynamo in their second road game of their inaugural MLS season.
Teitur Thordason was forced to make a number of changes to his lineup once again due to injuries and suspensions. Defender Alain Rochat started at centre midfield along who Jeb Brovsky who made his MLS debut for the Whitecaps. A positive sign for the team was captain Jay DeMerit re-inserted into the starting eleven after not playing since March 19th when the Caps opened their season.
Houston came out firing on all cylinders feeding of its home crowd and were eventually awarded a goal in the 37th minute as Cam Weaver scored to give the Dynamo a 1-0 lead.
That lead was very short lived after some great work by the “Swiss Ronaldinho” Davide Chiumento, Camilo was able to fire a shot past the Dynamo keeper to put the Caps on the board and tie the game at 1-1.
In the 42nd minute Houston would again score, as Vancouver captain Jay DeMerit was seriously struggling after re-tweaking his injured groin kept Houston onside and Bobby Boswell would give the home side a 2-1 lead at half.
That would mean the end for the American international who would be replaced by youngster Russell Teibert who joined the Whitecaps after playing internationally for team Canada’s u-20 team.
The Dynamo would continue to outplay the struggling Whitecaps side and again were awarded a goal as Caps keeper Jay Nolly came way out of the 18-yard box to try to play a ball but was beaten by Will Bruin who scored to ensure the 3-1 win for the Houston Dynamo.
Whitecaps first overall draft pick Omar Salgado also made his MLS debut as the 17-year old striker came on for Nizar Khalfan in the 84th minute.
Vancouver’s next game is Saturday, April 16th when it takes on Chivas USA at Empire Field, kickoff is just after 4pm.
