The Vancouver Whitecaps were set to play their first MLS game in nearly two months on Thursday night.
However, it appears as though they’ll have to wait a little longer.
Sources told The Athletic on Thursday afternoon that the match between the Chicago Fire and the Whitecaps has been postponed due to unsafe air quality.
The match was set to take place in Chicago at Soldier Field at 5:30 p.m. PT.
Currently in the Windy City, the US Air Quality rating is sitting at 388. Anything over 300 is considered hazardous to human health.
The hourly forecast predicts that the air quality will improve to safe conditions by tomorrow. However, an update was released shortly after the postponement that the match will be replayed on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
Both Vancouver and Chicago previously had a 14-day break in between games within that window (Sept. 26 to Oct. 10).
The postponement of the match means that the MLS debut of a worldwide soccer star has been put on hold.
Polish soccer legend Robert Lewandowski recently signed with the Chicago Fire, and he was expected to play on Thursday night.
Lewandowski and Whitecaps star Thomas Müller were previously teammates with Bayern Munich.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing him again,” Müller told reporters earlier in the week.
“We had very good times together, and I’m sure he will enjoy [the MLS]. I’m happy that he is not in our conference… I wish him the best of luck.”
The match was supposed to bring two of the best teams in the MLS together. Vancouver has a 10-2-2 record this season, while Chicago is 8-2-4.
With the match being rescheduled, Vancouver will now make their MLS return on Wednesday, July 22 on the road against FC Cincinnati. Lewandowski will make his MLS debut on the same night, against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami.
