It seems to be a matter of when, not if Thomas Müller will join the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The 35-year-old German soccer legend has indicated that he’s coming to Major League Soccer, which isn’t a surprise. Müller wouldn’t be the first European star to play out the twilight of his career in North America.
But the fact that the Bayern Munich forward has seemingly chosen Vancouver as his destination is something new.
Rather than sign with FC Cincinnati, the MLS club that held his discovery rights, or LAFC, a partner club of Bayern, Müller has his eyes on Vancouver.
The Whitecaps are now reportedly “finalizing a deal” for Müller, after agreeing to pay a $400,000 fee to FC Cincinnati, per Tom Bogert and Ben Jacobs of GiveMeSport. Vancouver appears likely to sign Müller through the 2026 season, paying him with targeted allocation money in 2025, before opening up a designated player spot next year.
Soccer insider Fabrizio Romano has added that it’s now a done deal.

Müller will be the most famous athlete ever to play for Vancouver, in any sport.
Müller has played his entire club career with Bayern Munich, winning 13 Bundesliga championships and two Champions League titles. Internationally, he has played in four FIFA World Cups, lifting the trophy in 2014 as Germany’s top goal-scorer.
The Whitecaps are surely hoping that the Müller signing is more than a publicity stunt. While he isn’t the same player he used to be, the club will have high hopes that he can help in their quest to win the MLS Cup this year.
The Whitecaps are currently enjoying the best season in club history since entering MLS in 2011. Following an appearance in the Concacaf Champions Cup Final earlier this season, the Whitecaps currently sit in second place in the MLS Western Conference.
