Vancouver Whitecaps expecting biggest MLS crowd of the season this weekend

Excitement keeps building around the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The team is on fire, sitting atop the MLS standings and making the upcoming Concacaf Champions Cup final. They’re not only winning games, they’re doing so in exciting fashion, and the on-field product is excellent.

That’s one factor behind the massive crowd expected to turn up for this Sunday’s game against LAFC. The Whitecaps are protecting their largest MLS crowd of the season, with more than 21,000 fans making the trip to BC Place.

Kick-off is at 4 p.m. on Sunday as the two Western Conference teams face off. The Whitecaps have a nine-point lead over LAFC already thanks to one of the best starts in MLS history.

The two teams have developed a rivalry over the past few years. LAFC has knocked the Whitecaps out of the MLS Playoffs in each of the past two seasons. However, this is a new Whitecaps team that is playing at a level far above anything they’ve achieved in MLS before.

The Whitecaps haven’t lost any of their last 10 games across all competitions. They’ve achieved this run of success despite their best player, Ryan Gauld, being sidelined with an injury.

While this weekend’s crowd is expected to be huge and their largest of the MLS season thus far, it’s far from the biggest they’ve managed at BC Place. That’s because they drew 53,837 fans for the Concacaf Champions Cup match against Lionel Messi and Inter Miami CF.

The Whitecaps beat Messi and Miami 2-0 in front of that massive crowd and will be hoping for a similar result against LAFC with another huge crowd behind them.

The Whitecaps players were vocal in asking fans to come out and support them more often after the success of the Messi match. It appears like they’re at least somewhat listening, as there should be a big crowd for the LAFC game this weekend.
