It was a controversial call that allowed Camilo Sanvezzo to score on a penalty kick, but the lone goal was all the ‘Caps needed to secure their third straight win. Camilo’s ninth goal of the season lifted the Whitecaps to a 1-0 victory.

D.C. United keeper Bill Hamid came out for a challenge on Matt Watson and took the Whitecap’s midfielder down. The referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot.

Despite D.C. United being the the worst team in the league standings-wise, the game was tough fought. The Whitecaps with only five road wins in the team’s three year history, managed to hold off the team led by Canadian Dwayne De Rosario and take an important three points.

The Whitecaps finished June with 12 of a possible 15 points and even scored a rare shutout win, courtesy of keeper Brad Knighton.

With the win, Vancouver improved to 7-5-4 and sit fourth in the Western Conference with 25 points. They will complete a two game road trip against Kansas City on Wednesday, July 3 before returning home to play Seattle at BC Place on July 6.

Centerback Andy O’Brien did not travel with the team while he nurses a hamstring injury. Russell Teibert (Canada) and Carlyle Mitchell (Trinidad & Tobago) will not be with the ‘Caps for their next two games as they compete in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
