Whitecaps Captain Jay DeMerit out indefinitely

The excitement was overwhelming in the city. New player additions, a new kit, and a new season had the Whitecaps FC on everyone’s mind heading into the weekend. A huge win over Canadian rivals Toronto FC has only added to that excitement. There was some bad news to report though, Captain Jay Demerit is out indefinitely with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Less than one half (seven minutes to be exact) into the new season, the Whitecaps FC were bitten by the injury bug. DeMerit came down awkwardly while challenging for a ball early in the first half, and had to be helped off of the field by team trainers. The team reported today that DeMerit has a ruptured Achilles tendon. The injury was lingering for DeMerit in the pre-season, and his status for the season opener was a big question mark heading into Saturday’s match. He was in the starting lineup versus TFC, but he didn’t last long.

DeMerit will undergo surgery today and there is no time frame for his return.

“Though we’re disappointed to see Jay go out with an injury, his leadership role will continue to be very important to our squad,” said Martin Rennie, Whitecaps FC head coach. “We expect him to make a full recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch.”
