Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit expected to announce retirement

Vancouver Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit will announce his retirement sometime over the next few days or even on Thursday, according to Global BC.

This comes after the 34 year old’s recent string of injuries that began during the 2012 MLS season when he incurred a concussion.

He missed another six months over the following season when he ruptured a tendon in his left ankle.

DeMerit was the first player the Whitecaps signed in 2010 when the franchise entered the MLS. He is also the team’s first captain under its MLS banner.

Prior to playing for the Whitecaps, he played for Watford F.C. at Hertfordshire, England and also competed for Team USA at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
