Lionel Messi has done a lot during his storied career, but he has never beaten the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Whitecaps didn’t just beat Inter Miami on Wednesday, they embarrassed Messi’s club.

Six days after the Whitecaps defeated Miami at BC Place, with Messi again playing all 90 minutes, they did it again. This time it was a 3-1 victory for Vancouver on Inter Miami’s home turf at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

It’s the biggest win in Whitecaps franchise history in the MLS era, and puts Vancouver into the final of the Concacaf Champions Cup.

Remarkably, the Whitecaps won the aggregate goal series by a 5-1 blowout. They did it with all four of Miami’s star players playing the entirety of both matches, while Vancouver’s top player Ryan Gauld sat out due to injury.

Vancouver carried a 2-0 lead into the second leg, but surrendered a goal to Jordi Alba in the ninth minute. There were nervous moments in the first half, but the Whitecaps held on, before exploding in the second half.

Brian White scored a massively important away goal in the 51st minute, before Pedro Vite put the game away with another goal two minutes later.

Sebastian Berhalter added another for the visitors in minute 71.

“So proud of this group. This is what we deserve. We deserve this. I’m so proud,” Berhalter said in a post-match interview with Kristian Jack of OneSoccer.

“The resilience, the character… This group is so close. I’ve never been a part of a group like this. To come here, against a great team, in a tough condition, to win this game is what it’s all about.”

Over 300 travelling supporters were in Florida to cheer on the Whitecaps. After Vancouver silenced the home crowd in the second half, you could hear the songs of Whitecaps fans clear on the broadcast.

The Whitecaps will play in the Concacaf Champions Cup Final on June 1, and there is a chance that match could be played at BC Place. That’ll depend on the result of tomorrow’s semi-final between two Mexican clubs: Cruz Azul vs. Tigres UANL.

Can Vancouver do it again?

“Let’s get it done,” Berhalter added. “Why not? One more game. Let’s get it done.”
