What’s your tech type? Take the quiz to find out

It’s no secret that Vancouver’s tech industry is booming. From start-ups to tech giants, it seems like everyone is calling the West Coast home these days, and that means demand for people to fill tech jobs has never been higher.

Despite the growth in the sector, few people realise that there are a whole host of possible careers in the tech industry to choose from. It’s no longer reserved for the math genius who can hack Sony’s email server, and trump a session of Minecraft all before breakfast. In fact anyone can find their niche in this growing market.

“Though I was always fascinated with technology, I didn’t necessarily think it was the field for me,” says Andrea Pitman, UX Design student at RED Academy. “As an actor, singer, and dancer, I love being creative. I was looking for a way to still be innovative but in a different arena. Now I realize there is so much opportunity within UX, I love it.”

Matt Parson, COO at RED, notes that one of the biggest misconceptions from prospective students is that they think tech jobs are boring, and require little creativity or variety. However, many of Vancouver’s most in-demand jobs require a mash-up of skills, including research, science, psychology, and strategic thinking.

“Digital marketing is so strategic, it’s definitely not just using social media all day. A whole new field of opportunity has opened up, with careers I would never have known existed”, says Chaney Cheung, a RED Digital Marketing Student.

Elgin McLaren, a RED Web Development student adds “If you have a passion and want to get into something super lucrative, there’s something for you in the tech industry. Don’t be intimidated. It’s very accessible. And, you don’t have to be a genius computer nerd.”
