Engine fire reported on WestJet plane after landing at YVR airport

A WestJet flight from Florida had a fiery scare after landing in Vancouver on the evening of Saturday, July 12.

Just before 11 p.m., a small engine fire was reported onboard WestJet flight 1285, which had arrived from Tampa International Airport and was parked at the gate at Vancouver International Airport (YVR).

YVR emergency crews responded swiftly, but officials say the aircraft’s onboard systems had already extinguished the fire before they arrived.

“There were no injuries and there are no impacts to other flights or YVR operations,” Vancouver airport staff told Daily Hive.

Airport and airline staff worked to reunite passengers with their baggage and provide additional support on site.

On Sunday morning, WestJet confirmed the fire originated in the tailpipe of one of the engines after shutdown, and that the crew used emergency slides to evacuate roughly 50 guests still onboard, out of an abundance of caution.

“No injuries have been reported, and the aircraft has been removed from service for maintenance,” WestJet said in a statement to Daily Hive.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has since deployed a team of investigators to assess what happened.

The TSB is an independent agency that looks into incidents across Canada’s air, marine, pipeline, and rail sectors. Its sole mission is to advance transportation safety, not to assign blame or liability.
