WestJet and Air Canada give the green light to personal electronics use during flight
WestJet has announced it will now allow passengers to use their tablets and smartphones during flight, becoming the second Canadian airline to do so, following Air Canada’s announcement on May 28.
Guests will now have full access to their devices throughout the flight, including during taxi-in and out, take-off and landing – though they still can’t transmit or receive data.
“We have been hard at work to meet all necessary conditions required for the safe operation of [Personal Electronic Devices] on board our Boeing Next-Generation 737 aircraft,” said Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Sales, Marketing and Guest Experience.
“Beginning today, all WestJet guests will have access to their favourite device for the duration of their flight, as long as it remains in airplane mode. We applaud Transport Canada’s recent decision, and we believe the exemption will further enrich an already remarkable guest experience.”
The move comes after the recently announced Transport Canada exemption that enables airlines, once they have met all necessary safety conditions, to provide guests with access to cameras, electronic games and tablets.
WestJet says they have completed comprehensive testing to ensure its fleet of Boeing 737 aircrafts is proven safe from interference with navigation or communication systems on the aircraft, with similar testing now underway on its fleet of Bombardier Q400s.
