Wendy’s summer salad line has a game-changing ingredient

Jul 16 2020, 8:06 pm

The more we learn about food, the more we realize that knowing where the things we eat come from is super important.

In addition to nutrition, knowing if certain ingredients have been farmed sustainably — with minimal impact on the environment and without harmful pesticides — is on people’s minds more now than ever.

So when we heard about the Wendy’s game-changing greenhouse-grown lettuce, naturally we were interested. The greens in the restaurant’s salad lineup are not only environmentally-friendly, but are also made without pesticides and not genetically modified.

The fresh, high-quality lettuce, which is also used to top its hamburgers and chicken sandwiches, is grown in Canadian-sourced peat with zero pesticides. On top of this, being grown in Canada’s pristine Rocky Mountains and using only pure Canadian water, it’s a 100% Canadian product (and crispy and crunchy as can be).

Not only are these greens tasty, though — they’re good for the planet as well. The greenhouse-grown lettuce uses more than 90% less water than field-grown lettuce and, thanks to innovative technology, recycles 99% of water used. The greenhouses even “recapture” the CO2 and heat used, further reducing their carbon footprint.

This isn’t the first time Wendy’s has offered a greenhouse-grown vegetable. The restaurant chain, which is dedicated to sourcing fresh, craveable, and forward-leaning food, also launched its 100% vine-ripened, greenhouse-grown tomatoes in 2018.

A press release from the company expands on Wendy’s commitment to high quality ingredients.

“At Wendy’s, we are committed to using fresh ingredients, whenever possible, across our menu. The move to greenhouse-grown lettuce is part of our ongoing commitment to offer Canadians the highest quality, best-tasting ingredients. We know that greenhouse farms grow produce that hits the mark for freshness and delicious flavour every time.

“What’s more, this transition will enable Wendy’s to further support Canadian producers and the Canadian economy, while offering supply predictability and consistency.”

You can find greenhouse-grown lettuce in any of Wendy’s bomb salads, including the signature Chicken Apple Pecan Salad made with juicy chicken, crispy red and green apples, cranberries, pecans, blue cheese, and pomegranate vinaigrette.

Wendy’s is constantly revamping its menu to ensure that every ingredient and item on its menu is of a high quality ever since it opened its first restaurant in 1969. Fast forward to today, and the restaurant’s values include not only providing a top quality product, but lowering its impact on the planet, too.

As part of its responsibility to ethical, sustainable, and environmentally-friendly practices, Wendy’s is committed to reducing energy consumption, sustainable beef production, reducing antibiotics, and using certified sustainable palm oil — just to name a few.
