The most in-demand career: Web developers

The shortage of skilled tech professionals has become a hot topic, especially amongst Vancouver’s growing industry. From UX Designers to Digital Marketers, there is no shortage of job listings looking to scoop up talent. However, none can quite compare to the demand of one career in particular: web developers. In fact, the need has become so apparent that many of Vancouver’s tech giants are constantly looking to fill vacant positions.

“Finding skilled web developers has always been a challenge,” says Nina Rizzi, Talent Manager at 6S Marketing. “But with demand as high as it is and so many companies looking, we’re seeing a real shortage of web developers right now, and I don’t see that changing any time soon.”

So what exactly does a web developer do? From programming to design, their role is to build and maintain the operations end of a company’s website. This includes designing, building, and implementing new web pages as well as integrating back-end applications.

“As a web developer, you’ll never stop learning,” says Felipe Arosemena, a web developer with Drive Digital. “I’ve always been a creative type, and this career allows me to produce something that’s not only tangible, but impactful. Plus I work with awesome people in a great environment. The work we do is innovative and fulfilling, which is what I’ve always wanted from a career.”

Arosemena says he receives at least two inquiries per month from companies around the globe looking to recruit him. This comes as little surprise, since it’s estimated that a web developer jobs will grow by 20% by 2022, which makes it one of the fastest amongst all other industries.

Agata Zasada, Talent Manager at Hootsuite, says that we have never had more demand for talented developers than right now. “Vancouver’s tech scene is growing at an unbelievable rate. The government figures suggest this industry is growing at only 2 to 3%, but be know these numbers are radically out. From what I see it on the HR front it is in a boom.”

Mandi Wise, Lead Instructor of the Web Developer program at RED Academy, notes that this demand is what prompted her and her team to introduce a unique curriculum that caters to this in-demand job.

“As a Front End Developer, I know exactly what companies are looking for in terms of skills, knowledge, and experience. That’s why the Web Developer program is so important, especially to hone local talent and give those looking for a career in tech a solid foundation to grow their creative talent.”
