Wayne Gretzky expresses loyalty to Canada as Olympic men's hockey team goes for gold

Despite his well-publicized friendship with U.S. President Donald Trump, Wayne Gretzky confirmed that he wants Canada to have success at the Olympics.

Gretzky was in attendance at Santagiulia Arena in Milan on Friday to witness Canada complete a late-game comeback over Finland in men’s hockey. The win has propelled Canada to the gold medal game, which will take place on Sunday.

Though many north of the border have taken issue with Gretzky’s politics, when it comes to hockey, the game’s all-time leading scorer says he’s still pulling for Canada.

Gretzky joined CBC’s panel prior to the game. While they talked hockey for the most part, it was a question near the end of the segment from James Duthie that has everybody talking.

Duthie asked Gretzky about the extreme tension between Canada and the U.S., and mentioned how he has been in the crossfire.

“Let’s worry about the game, that’s most important. Let’s hope that Canada can get to that final game,” Gretzky began. “Listen. I’m a hockey player. I’m a Canadian. I’m a true Canadian. I want Canada to win a gold medal. I’ve never wavered from that.

“I’ve been friends with presidents, prime ministers, somehow there’s a little more tension than normal. At the end of the day, Canada and the U.S. are like brothers and sisters. They’re going to fight and argue, but eventually you come together, right? That’s the way I see it.”

Gretzky has taken a ton of flak over the last year due to his friendship with Trump. Things really boiled over at last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off, with several Canadians questioning where the 65-year-old’s loyalty lies.
