Warning to local drug users: fentanyl stolen in armed pharmacy robbery

Dec 19 2017, 9:19 pm

A quantity of fentanyl was stolen in an armed robbery from a pharmacy in South Vancouver on Tuesday evening.

The Vancouver Police says two suspects armed with guns entered Peoples Drug Mart on West 57th Avenue near Cambie Street just before 6 p.m. Both suspects were armed with guns and fled the scene with pharmaceutical drugs.

This includes fentanyl, which police described as an “unforgiving drug.” While fentanyl appears as a white powder and can be mistaken for heroin, it is 150 times more powerful than morphine and 100 times stronger than heroin. Even a small dose of this synthetic drug can be lethal.

There are concerns by police that pure fentanyl or heroin mixed with fentanyl might be sold to unsuspecting local drug users.

In mid-October, more than 30 people overdosed at Downtown Eastside’s InSite after consuming fentanyl instead of heroin. Among the group of overdoses, there was also one death.

Anyone who has information about this robbery, or knows the whereabouts of the stolen pharmaceuticals, is asked to call the Vancouver Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477.
