VPD's adorable new dog will help comfort victims

The Vancouver Police Department has welcomed a new member to their force: an adorable three-year-old yellow lab named Lucca.

Lucca will serve as the force’s new trauma dog – so instead of taking down bad guys, he will comfort people experiencing traumatic experiences, pain, grief, illness or injury. Lucca might sit with a young victim giving a testimonial or comfort and support a victim of assault, for example.

This sweet boy was bred and raised by the Pacific Assistance Dog Society to be calm and well-mannered – perfectly suited to his new job.

Crisis Intervention Caseworker Sue Baker is Lucca’s handler. She says they’ve already seen firsthand what he can do to help trauma victims.

We are proud of the work that he’s done, and are looking forward to further developing his role as a member of our Unit and Department,” she says.
