VPD officer kicks out windshield to free himself after police wagon flips on its side

Dec 19 2017, 6:25 pm

A Vancouver Police Department officer was forced to kick his way to freedom after the police wagon he was driving was hit while going through an intersection.

The incident happened at about 5:45 a.m. on Sunday while the wagon traveled north on Gore Street. That’s where the wagon was t-boned by a car driving west on Hastings Street and was pushed into the on-coming lanes and onto its side.

To get out, the officer driving the wagon had to kick out the front windshield. Officers then climbed on top of the turned over wagon and removed the prisoner inside.

The prisoner was taken to hospital as a precaution and found to be uninjured. The wagon driver and the man driving the other car were also not injured.

Police say early investigations into the collision indicate the police wagon entered the intersection on a green light.
