Vote for Vancouver's First City Bird

Dec 19 2017, 6:15 pm

The Park Board is launching the first City Bird competition.

You can vote for your favourite bird from among six splendid and popular birds that live in Vancouver year round – Anna’s Hummingbird, Black-capped Chickadee, Varied Thrush, Pacific Wren, Pileated Woodpecker, and Northern Flicker. The winner will be named the ‘official’ City Bird for Bird Week 2015.

The competition is to raise awareness about the importance of birds in Vancouver as they are visible markers of a healthy ecosystem and an experiential link between people and local biodiversity. We are kicking off this campaign with a media event on Sunday, April 13 at 9:30am at Stanley Park Ecology Nature House, Lost Lagoon.

Follow the birds on Twitter

Follow the City Bird candidates on Twitter, where each bird will be tweeting as part of a light-hearted campaign to be named the 2015 City Bird. All feathered contenders have their own Twitter handle: @annathebird, @vancityblackcap, @thevariedthrush, @pacificwren, @vanwoodpecker, @northernflick.

Bird Week

The winning City Bird will be announced on May 10th, at the closing event of Vancouver Bird Week.

Bird Week runs from May 3 – 10 and features workshops, walks, presentations, exhibitions, and lectures celebrating birds in Vancouver. Bird Week was inspired by World Migratory Bird Day, a United Nations-sponsored initiative that recognizes the importance of birds as key indicators of our environment’s health.
