The Surrey Christmas Bureau helped 1,600 families last year including 5,000 children. One of their events to raise money is this Saturday, October 15 when they present a showcase of Latin American culture at Espirito Santo Hall. It’s good to get an early start on Christmas giving to ensure enough funds are raised to provide a merry Christmas for all.
Sponsored by Coast Capital, Safeway and the NOW newspaper, the evening promises to be a unique historical tour of colourful dance, delicious food and foot-tapping music.
K.C. Gilroy, Coordinator of the Surrey Christmas Bureau, has had a long-time dream to organize this event. “Each year more people from Latin America move to our city,” she said. “Viva Surrey! is a perfect place to learn more about our new neighbours and their culture, have lots of fun and support a good cause all at the same time.”
Four major performing groups, all based in Surrey, will provide traditional music and dance.
The event will begin with the influence of Old Spain, with Flamenco del Mar performing several passionate songs and dances. To represent what was happening in the New World, Alejandro Ruiz and his group will play traditional Mayan marimba music. As the centuries passed, the lovely art of the tango developed. The dancers of Portal al Tango, lead by Bobbi and Patricia Lusic, will glide across the floor and encourage audience participation. The evening will then feature the irresistible beat of Moviendolo, a hot salsa band headed by Surrey resident, Edwin Martinez.
Local restaurant Taqueria Jalisco will provide traditional food for sale. There will be silent auction items, prize draws and lots of chances to hop up and try your best salsa moves.
The Bureau expects to register closer to 2,000 families this year. Funds raised are greatly needed to ensure that every family in Surrey has access to toys and gifts for their children and nutritious food for the holidays.
