When you walk in the front door of Vitruvi, one of the first things you do is take a deep breath; somehow, it just smells like home. The Vancouver-based aromatherapy company recently launched its first home collection in hopes you find or maintain that signature scent for your environment, much like choosing a specific perfume or cologne.
Vitruvi For Home is a luxurious line of essential oil blends and handcrafted porcelain diffusers inspired by intentional living and a love of creative spaces, created by siblings and business partners Sara and Sean Panton. They’ve been featured in Monocle, Harpers Baazar, and Fashion Magazine, among other publications.
Scent is strongly linked to memory. Research even shows that odors are especially effective as reminders of past experience, and are closely connected to brain regions that handle memory and emotion.
Lavender. It’s the smell that reminds Sara Panton of being 10-years-old and massaging her grandmother’s hands with scented cream. For Sean, the scent of a bonfire reminds him of summer nights spent on a beach in Victoria with family.
Since they launched Vitruvi in 2014, they have continued to design each of their products with an understanding of how scent targets different parts of the brain and blend the aromas together with traditional perfume making techniques.
Each of the 5 distinct aromas bottled in matte black bottles were designed and named to represent specific moments in a home: CLEAN, EXCITE, CREATE, RELAX, SLEEP. Available in both black and white, the sleek diffusers are meant to look like a beautiful object that will seamlessly fit into any home.
The duo spoke with VancityBuzz about their ‘Vitruvi For Home’ line and the growth of their company.
What’s the process of blending the perfect scents to create something that would inspire “sleep” or “excite” in a bottle?
Sara: We spend a lot of time designing our scents and iterating on what the best blends are, both from a perspective of aroma as well as function. We start with the concept of what we want the product to be used for, and then research the 1-3 key botanical oils that should be included, from there we add more oils to help ‘balance’ the blend by including base notes and top notes as well as middle notes to create a well-rounded aroma.
Why was a home collection the next logical step for your company?
Sean: Since launching our first personal collection we were asked to translate the same experience into the home. It took us months to design the blends and source the perfect diffuser but we are so happy where we landed and how the collection turned out. The diffusers are hand created in Japan and the collection uses beautiful oils that are sourced from 20+ countries. We will be expanding the home collection oils soon and we’re excited to share that in upcoming weeks.
Are you content with Vitruvi’s growth since launching in 2014?
Sean: As business owners and entrepreneurs I’m not sure if we’re ever content with where our company is, but we have been blown away by the response we have had thus far and have our eyes and minds set on the next phase of the company. We didn’t at all expect to have the international press we received completely organically or the global community that resonated with our products.
Our biggest challenge has been navigating our growth and ensuring we are staying innovative. The aromatherapy industry is one that hasn’t seen very much innovation in the last decade and as a young and quickly growing company we’re proud of the boundaries we’ve pushed and the new ventures we will be sharing in the upcoming months.
