Movie goers in Vancouver will soon have a ‘first class’ option when it comes to their film viewing experience: The adults-only VIP Cinemas intimate theatre viewing experience will be coming to the new Cineplex location being built at the Marine Gateway development, next to the SkyTrain Canada Line’s Marine Drive Station in South Vancouver.
The theatre location will open in 2016 with 11 screens, including seven traditional auditoriums, one UltraAVX auditorium, and three VIP Cinemas auditoriums.
Not to be confused for an adult theatre, the adults only VIP Cinemas offers guests aged 19 years and older the option to watch films from auditoriums with stadium seating, luxurious oversized high-back leather seats that recline, plentiful leg room, side tables at each seat, reserved seating to reduce the hassle of purchasing tickets, and seat delivery food service by servers.
Menus vary between location, but they are generally comprehensive and diverse. This includes: a wide selection of alcoholic beverages with wines, beers, cocktails and martinis; appetizers such as calamari, edamame, nachos, spinach artichoke dip, and artisanal cheese and meat boards; entrees revolving around wraps, sandwiches, quesadillas, burgers, and salads; and varying desserts such as gourmet milkshakes, brownies, and cheesecakes. This adds to traditional movie snacks like popcorn, soft drinks, and candy.
In addition to the in-auditorium experience, VIP Cinemas customers will have access to an exclusive, stylish VIP lounge, featuring a large full bar and table seating, before and after the film viewing experience.
But what will the VIP Cinemas experience cost? At Cineplex locations across Canada, admission into the VIP Cinemas experience is $7.00 to $10.00 more than a regular price ticket. A similar surcharge can be expected for Vancouver’s first location.
There are a total of 14 VIP Cinemas at Cineplex locations across Canada, with two locations in the Lower Mainland at Cineplex Cinemas Abbotsford and SilverCity Coquitlam.
As of March 2015, Cineplex has a 78 per cent market share of the Canadian cinema market. In 2014, it generated over $1.2 billion in revenue with 162 theatres with 1,652 screens and over 70 million customers.
Other major commercial and retail tenants at the Marine Gateway mixed-use development include T & T Supermarket, Winners, and Steve Nash Fitness World & Sports Club. The first retailers and businesses are expected to open next month.
