Vancouver has served as host city for the Grey Cup game 15 times. The city’s first time hosting in 1955 was a major milestone for the Canadian Football League, marking only the second time since its inception the game was held outside of Ontario.

The 43rd Grey Cup game was played at Vancouver’s Empire Stadium, and with 39,417, the match set a record for the largest attending crowd that wasn’t broken until 1976.

Defending their Grey Cup title, the Edmonton Eskimos beat the Montreal Alouettes with a score of 34-19.

“Two Grey Cup records that still stand today were established in this game,” notes the CFL. The Eskimos’ Normie Kwong set a record for most rushing attempts with 30, while Sam Etcheverry’s 508 passing yards are the most ever in a Grey Cup game.

Let’s take a look back at images from the first time Vancouver ever hosted the Grey Cup in 1955.
