They say team work makes the dream work, which seems to be exceedingly true for Dutch producers Ruben and Victor, known collectively as Vicetone. What began as a general love for music between friends, has since exploded into full on careers for the duo just four years later. With multiple releases currently out on major labels, including their latest Aurora EP release, and regular stints at some of the worlds largest electronic music festivals, Vicetone has a bright future ahead of them.
Currently on tour across North America celebrating the release of their new Aurora EP, Vicetone was able to sit down with us in advance of their show tonight at Celebrities Nightclub to chat about everything from their signature production style to what they like to do on their days off.
What’s up! We’re Ruben and Victor and together we are Vicetone. We’ve been producing music for four years now and are still loving every second of it.
Monstercat has been there for us from the start, back to before we even started touring. They’ve helped us shape our music career from the beginning and some of our most successful releases have been with that label. We feel a lot of gratitude for the way they’ve helped our careers and how they’ve treated us; we’re so happy to be part of the Monstercat family. Plus, we feel like we bring an unique sound to the label which is also exciting for us.
These days we watch a lot of NBA games to relax… the playoffs are really incredible to watch (especially when you’ve grown up in Europe and never got the chance to). Other than making music in the studio, we de-stress by spending time with family and friends, playing video games, watching sports, and playing sports. But music is still the best form of relaxation therapy for us.
For our music it’s the melody, the feel, and the energy. We always try to give our tracks a certain type of energy that people can recognize as the ‘Vicetone’ style. There’s sometimes discussion on our social media pages by our fans about what constitutes the Vicetone style, but we feel that even if the style is different, the feeling and the melody is what gives our tracks that signature sound.
For our liveshows, it’s all about the energy and the positive vibes. We want to make people smile; we want them to go crazy and leave exhausted but happy! We want people to forget about their responsibilities in their daily lives and lose themselves in the music. That’s what our ultimate goal is when performing; we love what we do.
It has evolved and we’ve become more comfortable producing different sounding records while still remaining true to our core Vicetone sound. We feel it’s important to not lock yourself in one specific genre or style – it makes producing music a lot less fun. Making music is a fun process for us and the more creative we allow ourselves to be, the more fun it is for us.
Armin van Buuren said it best, “Never be a prisoner of your own style!” That said, we will always love house music, that’s what we grew up with and that’s the music that got us to where we are today so we will never abandon that.
Lot’s of new music, exciting collabs, some huge remixes, and big tours. Also our new single on Monstercat, the follow up to “Heartbeat,” and “What I’ve Waited For”… we cannot wait to release it!!
