Dance your heart out: City of Bhangra 2016 is set to hit Vancouver

Bhangra is a form of traditional Indian dance and music that’s sure to get you moving – and the Vancouver International Bhangra Celebration Society has a full range of events coming up for City of Bhangra 2016 to give you a taste of Indian culture.

Here’s the full list of all six events coming up this month.

Kickoff Party: Crash An Indian Wedding

  • What: Indian weddings are lavish affairs ending with epic receptions. Come out and enjoy this extravagant event – put on your party dress, but no gifts please. Featuring local DJ Khanvict, one of the top South Asian/Fusion wedding DJs on the west coast. He won accolades at the BC Wedding Awards, and the South Asian Wedding Awards.
  • Where: Club 560 – 560 Seymour Street, Vancouver
  • When: Saturday, June 11; 9 pm to 2 am
  • Cost: $25 or $30 at the door.

Where Not To Do Bhangra

  • What: Take “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter Chicken,” throw in some burlesque bhangra, and you’ve got a crazy night of comedy, dance, and pure entertainment that pushes buttons and boundaries.
  • Where: Rio Theatre – 1660 East Broadway, Vancouver
  • When: Sunday, June 12; 7 to 10 pm
  • Tickets: $20 or $25 at the door.

Bhangra on Main

  • What: Experience the intimate side of bhangra in this all-acoustic evening featuring renowned Punjabi musician and singer Vijay Kumar Yamla, with narration by Vancouver’s Mo Dhaliwal.
  • Where: Fox Cabaret – 2321 Main Street, Vancouver
  • When: Tuesday, June 14; 8 to 9:30 pm
  • Cost: $15 or $29 at the door.

Bhangra: She

  • What: Strong, creative, empowered and empowering: six fearless young women share their stories of struggle and achievement on the way to success. Featuring activists and educators, DJs and producers, actors, rappers, and filmmakers, this one-day event is open to everyone, but especially South Asian youth with an interest in the arts, identity, and the politics of gender. Featuring Horsepowar (Jasleen Powar), Bianca Maieli, Rakhi Mutta, Kiran Rai, Jasmine Sandlas, and Malinder Tooray.
  • Where: Kwantlen Polytechnic – 12666 72nd Avenue, Surrey
  • When: Thursday, June 16; 5 to 9 pm
  • Cost: Free

Downtown Bhangra

  • What: Don’t miss Vancouver’s biggest backyard party of the year: a two-day open-stage party for the whole family, with nonstop bhangra in the heart of the city. With more than 325 local, national, and international superstars, you’ll be up and dancing.
  • Where: Vancouver Art Gallery Plaza – 750 Hornby Street, Vancouver
  • When: Friday, June 17; 5 to 10 pm
  • Cost: Free

VIBC Official Afterparty

  • What: What better way to wrap up the biggest bhangra festival in North America? Join the hottest DJs on the dance floor as they spin the latest and greatest bhangra and urban beats. Featuring DJ KSR, one of the best known bhangra DJs out of North America.
  • Where: Club 560 – 560 Seymour Street, Vancouver
  • When: Saturday, June 18; 10 pm
  • Cost: $25 or $30 at the door.
