Velo-City Global Comes to Vancouver in 2012

Dec 19 2017, 12:39 pm

Today our mayor, Gregor Robertson will make a major announcement as Vancouver is set to host Velo-City Global 2012. This is the first time since 1996 that theVelo-City Global Conference on cycling will be held outside of Europe. With all the new bike lanes (Hornby, Dunsmuir, Burrard and many more down the pipe) having this conference in Vancouver makes complete sense.  Furthermore, this is only the second time in the conferences history that it has been held outside of Europe. No doubt this is a major coup for Vancouver and like them or not expect more cycling related announcements shortly.

This year the conference was held in the cycling mecca of Copenhagen. In 2011 it’s slated to happen in Seville, Spain.

The conference itself is expected to attract a huge North American contingent. Especially with Portland (one of the better cycling cities in North America) being so close. The city of Vancouver can expect about 1000 or so participants to take part in workshops and seminars.

Like them or not bike lanes are here to stay as the city has reiterated they are the number two transportation priority. Rapid transit being number one *coughs* UBC line now please!

We’ll have more on this as it develops in the coming months. I expect an announcement of Bixi Vancouver to be the next big thing for Vancouver cyclists.
