Seven-vehicle pileup at Abbotsford highway construction site prompts police warning

The BC Highway Patrol is warning drivers to be cautious along a stretch of Highway 1 through Abbotsford that’s under construction after a seven-vehicle pileup Monday morning.
Police say the chaos started with a tractor-trailer that didn’t slow down in time and struck multiple other cars. A Tesla also didn’t stop in time and hit the tractor-trailer from behind.
It’s the third collision in that spot since Friday.
“There is an unexpected merge in the left-most lane of Highway 1 westbound just past Mt. Lehman,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol said in a news release. “The centre lane is shut down due to construction, and all traffic needs to slow down and leave more following distance than usual.”
Thankfully no one was seriously hurt in the series of crashes, but the slowdowns have been a “massive inconvenience” to drivers, police said.
The transport truck driver in Monday’s crash was issued a ticket for driving without due care and attention, and further charges under the Motor Vehicle Act are also possible for the other drivers involved.
