VanVan: Fresh, affordable Japanese Izakaya with a name that fits right in

Dec 19 2017, 8:16 pm

Nestled amongst the high-end boutiques and countless coffee shops of Robson Street sits a bastion of traditional Japanese culture.

VanVan is one of Vancouver’s most talked about new hotspots for those seeking an authentic Japanese experience. Presented as a traditional Izakaya (or Japanese pub), VanVan offers up Kyoto inspired dishes—meaning, you won’t find sushi here. Instead, the food is closer to what you would find in Japan.

Chicken VANVAN

Chicken VANVAN is chicken cutlet with sweet sour sauce and teriyaki sauce ($7.50).

Russian Roulette Takoyaki2

Russian Roulette Takoyaki is a ball-shaped Japanese snack made of a wheat flour-based batter, usually containing diced octopus. One of them has spicy wasabi and hot sauce ($5.80).

Salmon Yukke (1)

Salmon Yukke is chopped salmon sashimi with garlic sauce ($6.80).

Yellow Tail Carpaccio (1)

Yellow Tail Carpaccio with curry dressing ($7.80).

Duck Carpaccio (3)

Duck Breast Carpaccio ($7.80).

The prices are affordable ranging from $1.50 for Oden stewed in bonito broth to $15.80 for top grade Sashimi, all they ask is that patrons who come in, order at least one or two items per person. It seems obvious, but with a limited capacity and VanVan’s popularity soaring every seat is in high demand.

“The sound VanVan in Japanese means ‘fully, a lot or many,'” said Manager Hirotaka Niwa. “So we want a lot of customers to come back many times to our restaurant.”

They also have great deals for the thirsty people of Vancity! Refreshing Sapporo Beer and Okanagan Springs Pale Ale are just $12.95 for a pitcher.  That might get you one drink at some other places you know. A number of hot and cold Sake ranging from $6 to $38 on the high-end for Rashiku Dai-Ginjo (300ml). Wine and cocktails are also available.

Next time you’re walking or shopping on Robson, look for this cool, easy going Izakaya between Jervis and Broughton on the north side — the logo and sign are hard to miss.
