Vancouver's Micro-lofts Smallest in Canada

Yesterday the smallest condos in Canada were unveiled, the majority, which are under 300 square feet go for $850/month (cable and internet included). Considering the rents for studio apartments, these rental rates aren’t too bad. In a city that is unaffordable for many average income earners, these 30 “micro-lofts” (witty marketing term, they’re just studio apartments) are a much needed breath of fresh air, albeit a small one.

Now many will dismiss this as too costly, especially for the amount of space one gets. However, for an individual, 300 square feet can be plenty. Furthermore, the suites are designed to maximize square footage by using built-in murphy beds, folding tables and smaller appliances.

Located in Gastown, the suites range in size from 226 to 291 square feet. Pretty small right? Well they are nowhere near the smallest in the world. That title belongs to a Manhattan apartment that comes in at a luxurious 90 square feet. That rents for $700 a month.

The city of Vancouver is growing and needs more varied housing options for all income levels, not just low income or welfare recipients.
