Vancouver's January blossoms hint at first sign of spring

Jan 3 2025, 11:29 pm

It’s only the third day of 2025, but it’s already starting to look like spring in some parts of Vancouver.

Early-blooming trees near Lost Lagoon have already begun sporting light pink blossoms on their branches.

The trees are on the grassy shore near the daycare and tennis courts. They are Shirotae cherry blossom trees, according to the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival’s blossom finder map. It estimates that the trees will reach peak blooms between late March and early April.

Fall and winter have been wetter and slightly warmer than usual so far, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

But this year’s La Nina winter could bring cold, snow, and rain to Western Canada for the remaining winter months. The Fraser Valley is currently under a snowfall warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada.
