Vancouver Women in Business: Sandi Lesueur

Sitting down with Sandi Lesueur, Business Developer for OOH Lifestyle and Riversol, it’s immediately obvious how passionate she is about her career. She’s placing a call for her client, Derrick Rutledge – the makeup artist to celebs like Oprah Winfrey and Michelle Obama – who is launching his own beauty line, OOH Lifestyle, this Spring. Sandi is in charge of the Canadian launch and is thus the force to making it a success.

“This is Sandi Lesueur calling on behalf of Derrick Rutledge, Oprah Winfrey’s makeup artist,” Sandi says into her mobile.

She turns to me, beaming “It’s still so much fun saying that!”

A woman of positive thought, endearing strength, passion, and profound wisdom, Sandi has become known as the Branding Specialist of Vancouver for beauty products; pushing the brands and success of companies such as Riversol – founded by dermatologist Dr. Jason Rivers – and OOH Lifestyle, Sandi finds her true passion in promoting beauty lines, and doing so with excellent customer service and a positive outlook.

She is also currently producing a reality TV pilot called Fashion Ambush involving hair, makeup and fashion styling, thus furthering her dreams and high aspirations.

With her innate optimism, Sandi notes that it hasn’t always been easy; she’s been accused in the past of living in an unrealistic bubble of positivity.

“I don’t live in a bubble,” says Sandi, “but I do focus on finding the good, being appreciative and acknowledging people and their efforts. I don’t understand why people are fascinated by the negative.”

What is your biggest professional failure?

Sandi goes on to tell me about her first job after graduating from the University of Saskatchewan. She worked for an oil firm doing daunting tasks like data entry, and although she knew it wasn’t for her, she was still emotionally pitted at her sudden dismissal.

“It was God’s way of changing my path,” she tells me. “A friend took me out for lunch to pick up my spirits, and when I left the restaurant I found a Garfield card on the pavement that said ‘Bon Voyage.’ I looked up from this blank card and saw a travel agency. Right there on the spot I bought myself a one way ticket to Hawaii.”

After spending three years on the island, Sandi returned to Vancouver to pursue her dreams with the beauty industry, enrolling in Blanche Macdonald’s beauty program and working with MAC Cosmetics for eight years; Sandi never dreamed she’d eventually meet her role model, Frank Toskan, the Founder of MAC Cosmetics, let alone that he’d end up married to her cousin Darren with four adopted children!

What is the one piece of advice you would give your younger self?

Pondering this for a moment, Sandi tells me of her younger self and how she’d accomplished her dreams of cheerleading for the Calgary Stampeders.

“It sounds cheesy, but I really wanted to experience that. It wasn’t about promoting myself; it was about getting people excited and involved in something.”

Sandi’s piece of advice to her younger self is a value her mother and father taught her: “Laugh at yourself, laugh often and don’t be afraid to fail.”

Not only is Sandi an inspiration in herself, she’s also a strong believer of mentoring young women and women in business; Sandi believes in the importance of crossing off the items on your bucket list while still remaining focused on your career and family life. Sandi is a proud mother to a 15-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son, and was a single mom up until she met the man who changed her life over a year ago.

What is your most inspirational quote?

Sandi immediately pulls out her notebook; I expect her to point to the quote on the cover, which reads “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Instead she opens it up.

She finds a page where her daughter had left her a surprise note, and there written in her daughter’s handwriting is Sandi’s inspirational quote:

“It doesn’t matter how slow you go, as long as you do not stop.” – Wisdom of Confucius.
