After beating a strong squad from Edmonton, the Vancouver Whitecaps FC moved one step closer to representing Canada in this year’s CONCACAF Tournament. If you watched the game, either at a packed BC Place or on Sportsnet, you could see that the sophomore version of the MLS newcomers are looking leaps and bounds better than they were last season.
The Whitecaps FC’s scoring troubles had supporters worried after a scoreless first half. Then, Edmonton scored in the second half. Despite holding a 2-0 lead on aggregate goals going into the match, tension was building. Then, almost as soon as fans began doubting their club, the Whitecaps FC strikers took over.
Davide Chiumiento was especially dominating for the home squad. He recorded an assist on both Sebastien Le Toux’s tieying and eventual game winner late in teh 2nd half. Just to make sure, Chiumineto found Darren Mattocks in injury time to put the Whitecaps up 3-1 in the game and clinching their 5-1 win over Edmonton. Le Toux was named the man of the match versus Edmonton after scoring two goals.
In the first part of the MLS year, the Whitecaps were having a shortage in the goals department. Striker, Erica Hassli, has been struggling out of the gate. The struggles on the attacking side of the ball had even forced new head coach Martin Rennie to use both Hassli and fellow striker Camillo off of the bench.
Luckily for Whitecaps fans, our squad has found a way out of the goal scoring funk. Hassli has found his game lately and has started to look like the dominating force on the pitch he showed us last season. Second year striker, Omar Salgado has began to silence his critics from last year. And new Whitecaps addition, Sebastien Le Toux has found some chemistry with his new squad.
The team now sets their focus on a two game matchup with Toronto FC to decide the AMWAY Championship. The first leg of the two games takes place here at BC Place on Wednesday, May16th.
