Vancouver forecast signals thunderstorm risk with humidex exceeding 30°C

Hide your kids, there’s a risk of thunderstorms in the Vancouver weather forecast, and it could get pretty muggy over the next couple of days.

You don’t actually need to hide your kids, but keeping them hydrated is a good idea as the humidex could exceed 30°C on Wednesday.

Environment and Climate Change Canada expects a high of 24°C on Wednesday, with inland temperatures potentially reaching 30°C. The humidex, or the feels-like temperature, could make things feel a lot worse in Vancouver and inland, with temperatures potentially reaching 27°C or 33°C inland.

Thunderstorm risks rarely pan out in Vancouver, but ECCC says there’s a chance of one tonight before morning, and another chance on Thursday. For storm lovers, it’s not a high probability, with ECCC calling for a 40 per cent chance of showers.

Temperatures are forecasted to be just as warm in Vancouver tomorrow, with a high of 24°C and a humidex of 27°C.

After a slight dip in temperatures on Friday, ECCC predicts a gradual increase with a high of 26°C expected next week on Tuesday.

Today’s temperatures will exceed regular temperatures and are considered above-seasonal, which typically hovers closer to 21°C.

The Weather Network tells a slightly different story, suggesting the threat is “severe.”

B.C. warns of drought conditions

The warm temperatures in the Vancouver weather forecast are a good reminder that the need for water conservation is at a high across the province.

Yesterday, the B.C. government shared a release urging people to conserve water.

“Protecting B.C.’s water resources is a shared responsibility, and the actions we take today will help communities, farmers and businesses manage increasing drought pressures,” said Randene Neill, minister of water, land and resource stewardship, in a statement.

The government says that the province is expected to be dealing with elevated drought conditions this summer and is concerned about water scarcity.

In Metro Vancouver, stage 3 watering restrictions are currently in effect. Metro Vancouver Regional District says that watering restrictions will move from stage 3 to stage 2 beginning July 16.

Under the current restrictions, residents and businesses are not allowed to water their lawns.
