Vancouver City Hall Votes NO to BC Place Casino

Dec 19 2017, 12:55 pm

Today Vancouver city council voted no to the new $500 million casino expansion that would have been attached to the newly renovated B.C. Place Stadium.  Further, mayor Gregor has gone one step further and called for a moratorium to gaming expansion in the City of Vancouver. Is this the right call? Many protested the Casino because they didn’t want it in their backyard. These residents failed to realize that they live DOWNTOWN and next to two stadiums. If these people want quiet, they can gladly move to the ‘burbs, downtown isn’t for you. Others protested the casino due to the negative impact it would have on society.

As for myself, I was indifferent to the casino expansion. However, I do see the economic merits of it. On the other hand there are the societal issues to consider. In a city that has safe injection sites for addicts, why not a casino for gamblers to get their fix. Stopping this casino will do nothing to rid the gambling addictions. Just like other addicts they’ll get their fix and that fix is called River Rock Casino in Richmond. I’ll bet the City of Richmond jumped for joy after hearing about this decision.

The question now is, where will the money come from to fund the B.C. place renovations?
