Fighting Chance Productions is bringing the gritty streets of London to Vancouver in Stephen Sondheim’s classic thriller, Sweeney Todd (sorry ladies no Johnny Depp though). Once Sweeney Todd opens a barbershop above Mrs. Lovett’s Meat Pie Emporium, the face of the city will never be the same again. With a score that is often described as a masterpiece, Sweeney Todd is regarded as one of Sondheim’s best scores, and Fighting Chance Productions is proud to have it open its season and we at Vancity Buzz have 3 pairs of tickets to giveaway for next weeks performances.
Sweeney Todd promises to be more than just another fall musical. Presented at the Jericho Arts Centre, director Ryan Mooney will bring the audience closer than ever to the story of the mad barber hell-bent on revenge, by setting it in the round. With a fresh take that draws out the sexier elements of the story while keeping true to Sondheim’s goal of “scaring” an audience, the intimacy of the Jericho Arts Centre makes it the ideal venue for this eerie tale, timed perfectly for the Halloween season. With a talented cast of 16 and the largest orchestra Fighting Chance Productions has ever had, Sweeney Todd promises to be an event to remember.
