3 Vancouver tech startups are valued at over $1 billion

Three Vancouver tech startups have the honour of joining the ranks of the “unicorn club” – that is, private companies valued at $1 billion or more.

Only five such startups exist in Canada.

A new infographic from Vancouver-based Visual Capitalist, an investment trend monitoring website, shows the increasing number of North American companies joining the ranks of the unicorn club.

The three Vancouver tech companies worth over $1 billion are Slack, Avigilon, and Hootsuite. The other two Canadian billion dollars companies are Kik and Shopify.

Another term for Canadian companies specifically who join the ranks of the unicorn club is the “narwhal club” after the horned marine mammal that exists in the far north of Canada.
