Come the start of the new school year, teachers in Vancouver will become the first in B.C. required to pay for parking at work.

According to Global News, The Vancouver School District says the service will cost between $10 – $15 per month, per employee.

Once the change goes into effect, Vancouver will be the first school district in the province to charge teachers to park.

The district says more than $300,000 is spent on repaving and snow removal for 3,500 parking spaces each year.

By charging for parking, it estimates it will earn back $225,000.

The change comes on the heels of a massive budget shortfall for the district, and is among a number of other budgetary cutbacks.

Last month, the band and strings programs were able to continue after the district’s board voted to dip into it’s long-term contingency fund. There is doubt the programs will be able to continue past this year.

Teachers still feel they shouldn’t be paying for parking, pointing out many of them volunteer their time for extracurricular activities.
