Dec 17 2025, 7:39 pm

It was a wild and stormy night that at one point left over 100,000 BC Hydro customers without power across Metro Vancouver and parts of the province, and people are sharing their harrowing tales of the great storm of December 2025.

Folks in Metro Vancouver are getting a bit of a break on Wednesday with some sun shining a spotlight on the aftermath of a stormy Tuesday night.

The Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) forecast isn’t as dry, with more rain stretching through till next Tuesday.

People have taken to social media to share their stories about the storm keeping them up, sharing photos and videos, and more.

A Port Coquitlam resident shared a video on X, adding that they’ve never seen so much rain.

Other online storm chasers shared videos of the blustery winds.

On Reddit, someone shared a video taken through a window revealing a bright flash in the distance, which some theorized may have been a power line being damaged.

Two other Reddit threads have over 600 comments between them on the Vancouver subreddit. One post titled “I woke up because of the storm” had hundreds of people sharing that they were in the same boat.

“We all up late tonight lol,” one Redditor responded.

“Just had to call 911 for a fallen tree on a power line right beside my balcony, sounded like a bomb went off,” someone else said.

Most people who responded suggested that the howling winds were what was keeping them up.

One Redditor said they had to work in the weather, adding, “It’s not pleasant at all.”

A Redditor from Tsawwassen said, “At one point, my whole house was shaking. Glad I tied down my inflatable xmas decor well. He’s still standing!”

Another Redditor shared a sobering but thoughtful comment, saying, “Thinking about how rough it must be for people who live on the streets tonight.”

While winds are letting up, ECCC says that things will still be a bit gusty over the course of the day and into a bit of tomorrow.

BC Hydro shared an operational update at 11:30 a.m., saying that it restored power to around 70,000 customers, adding that there are still around 8,200 customers without power in Vancouver.
