A special weather statement is in effect for Metro Vancouver this afternoon and tonight as heavy rain and strong winds are rolling into the region.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), a strong frontal system will move across the Lower Mainland on the evening of Thursday, Oct. 23 and into Friday.
“Southern sections of Metro Vancouver will see winds increase to southeast 60 gusting to 80 km/h near the water tonight and will persist through Friday morning,” said the ECCC. “Winds will ease in the afternoon as the front moves into the interior of the province.”
The special weather statement comes just a day after the Government of Canada department warned of an atmospheric river impacting the region.

Meteorologists are forecasting 20 to 40 mm of rain overnight and into Friday throughout Metro Vancouver. However, up to 80 mm is possible over the North Shore Mountains.
ECCC is also warning of several hazards during the fall storm, including power outages from fallen trees due to strong winds, and localized flooding caused by blocked drains.

“Travel may become difficult due to water pooling on roads, poor traction due to fallen leaves and reduced visibility in heavy rain,” ECCC added. “(And) watch for rapidly rising river and stream levels.”
Rain is expected to taper to a few showers by Friday evening, but hold onto your umbrellas as showers are forecast to stick around in Metro Vancouver through to next week.
