The Vancouver Short Film Festival on October 28-29 may be short, but it has a lot to celebrate.

The festival kicks off on October 28th, International Animation Day, with a FREE screening of the NFB’s New Release Program. The screening features HIGGLETY PIGGLETY POP!, based on a book by Maurice Sendak (author of Where the Wild Things Are), co-produced by Spike Jonze, and featuring the voices of Meryl Streep and Forest Whitaker. Then, a panel of animation experts discuss “Using Animation in your Short Film”: Mario Pochat, Emilie Goulet, Martin Rose, and moderator Jeff Chiba Stearns, who sold his animated short, Yellow Sticky Notes, to YouTube.

The night ends with an Emerging Filmmakers Screening showing off works from five film schools in Vancouver, and an Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony. Marke Driesschen, weatherman for CTV, will MC the night.

Friday the 29th features World’s Best Shorts, an international award-winning showcase; then the “Best of VSFF’s 5 Years” screening, and the Professional Filmmakers Screening showing films with local actors Jodelle Ferland (Case 39, Silent Hill, Twilight 3), Gabrielle Rose (Mothers & Daughters, Robson Arms) and Michael Ecklund (Intelligence, Shattered). Comedian Greg Kettner will MC.

The festival ends with a Closing Party and Awards Ceremony. Parties are free admission with the purchase of a ticket or pass and take place in the Vancity Theatre atrium.
