It appears nothing is safe, as another scam has emerged in Metro Vancouver, and this time it has to do with chimneys.

Over the last few weeks, various Metro Vancouver police agencies have shared news releases about random scams and criminal endeavours, including a recent story we published about a glue-related scam.

Now, the New Westminster Police Department is warning the public about a chimney-related scam.

The concerned neighbour of a 90-year-old New West resident phoned the authorities, worried that the 90-year-old was the target of fraudsters.

On March 25, officers visited the 90-year-old’s home, where they learned that the senior citizen had been approached by two men who were soliciting their chimney cleaning and sealing services.

“The resident shared she was asked to pay a significant deposit up front. Officers discouraged the resident to pay the $12,000 she had been asked for. The file is still under investigation,” police shared in a release.

“This neighbour is exactly the kind of person I would want living next to my grandparents,” said New West Police Constable Peter Jon. “This is the kind of community New Westminster is, where people look out for and help one another.”

The department is encouraging everyone to do research before hiring anyone to do any home repairs.

“If you are approached by someone offering unsolicited repairs, do not feel pressured to make a decision. Take time to verify the business and speak with someone you trust,” the department advised.

“There are several different kinds of scams surrounding chimney inspection and repair ranging from high pressure sales and fraudulent companies to fake claims of major structural damage discovered that requires thousands of dollars in immediate repairs. In many instances, scammers will ask for payment in cash.”

If you believe you’ve been the victim of a fraud or scam attempt, the New West Police Department encourages you to call 604-525-5411.
