City of Vancouver to launch expedited application process for patio permits

On Friday the City of Vancouver announced it would be launching an expedited application process for businesses looking for patio permits.

The online application process will open on June 1. This new system aims to help establishments impacted by the pandemic.

In the announcement, the City stated that places applying for small and medium-sized patios next to their establishment or in a street parking space can expect to receive their permit within 48 hours from the time they apply, provided they have met all application requirements.

The release noted that more complex applications will require more time to review and will follow the standard review process.

“The City has worked to create a more efficient application process, with clear guidelines to expedite their licence application,” read the release.

“Staff are also engaging with BIAs, business leaders, and community organizations across the City to identify opportunities to temporarily repurpose streets and parking lanes for new public spaces. These spaces can support additional seating, queuing, and other creative business uses.”

This news comes after a provincial announcement earlier today, which confirmed BC restaurants, pubs, breweries, and other licensees will be permitted to expand their licensed area.

The City of Vancouver said its staff will “work with business applicants to ensure that the coordination between these two processes is as smooth as possible.”
