The first week of November has been a wet one in the forecast, but things are about to get even more soaked with a new rainfall warning.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued the alert for the region starting early on Friday, Nov. 6.

According to ECCC, it will be the first storm in a series of wet and windy weather ahead.

“A potent low-pressure system will bring heavy rain, beginning after midnight tonight and continuing through the day on Friday,” said ECCC in the alert. “Total rainfall amounts may reach up to 80 mm for communities at higher elevations on the North Shore, and communities near southern Howe Sound.

“Lower elevations and communities in northeast Vancouver, including Coquitlam, can expect closer to 50 mm by the time the rain tapers off Friday evening.”

ECCC said in the rainfall warning that water is likely to pool in low-lying areas and on roads, and that there may be washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts.

“Visibility will likely be suddenly reduced at times. Some property damage is possible,” added the federal government department.

“Clear storm drains of fallen leaves in your neighbourhood to minimize potential damage to property.”

Southeast winds will pick up overnight, blowing up to 20 km/h, and up to 40 near the Strait of Georgia.

On Friday, southeast winds will blow between 30 and 50 km/h, and gusting up to 70 km/hr near the Strait of Georgia in the morning and early afternoon.

Rain dominates the weekend forecast and into next week, with no clearing in sight.

Daytime highs will hover between 11°C and 14°C for the next seven days.

However, temperatures overnight will drop to a low between 6°C and 10°C.
