"Keys to the Streets" public pianos might be in danger of extinction
“Keys to the Streets,” a public piano initiative started in 2013, might be at risk of going under thanks to a lack of funds.
Last year, the program launched by CityStudio randomly placed pianos around Vancouver at Canada Place, Chinatown, Main Street, West Hastings Street, the Vancouver Aquarium, Robson Park, Strathcona Park, Spyglass Dock and Dude Chilling Park.
This year, funding is scarce, and one of the organizers has launched a crowd funding campaign to try and raise $20,000 to keep it going.
“The pianos offer a space for improvisational gatherings, connections and celebrations of musical expression and appreciation from anyone. Through having local artists paint the pianos, the pianos also serve as art pieces around the city,” the team said in last year’s public report.
The money would support two part-time coordinators and “covers the modest hard costs associated with the project” such as tuning and maintenance over the two month period when the pianos are on the streets.
