Controversial Vancouver politician Dallas Brodie could lose her seat as recall petition is issued

A controversial Vancouver politician, an MLA who has made headlines due to her thoughts on reconciliation and residential schools, could soon lose her seat.

Dallas Brodie is the MLA for Vancouver-Quilchena, and a recall petition has been received by Elections BC for her removal.

“The proponent of the recall is Dorothy Cumming,” Elections BC says.

Elections BC says that any registered voter in B.C. can apply to have a recall petition issued in their electoral district. To do so, there is a $50 processing fee, and a statement of 200 words or fewer on why they feel the MLA should be recalled.

The petition is going to be issued on May 21, 2026. After that, registered canvassers can start to collect signatures. The petition is due by July 20, 2026.

In order for the recall to be successful, canvassers have to collect signatures from 40 per cent or more of eligible voters to sign the petition, which in this case means 15,232 voters.

If the signature threshold isn’t met, no further action will be taken. However, if the threshold is met, after a verification process, Brodie’s seat would become vacant, and a by-election would have to be called within 90 days. Brodie would be allowed to run as a candidate in that by-election.

Elections BC says that historically, 30 previous recall petitions have been issued. Six were returned for verification, and five of those six did not have enough valid signatures.

Earlier this year, the B.C. Conservative Party removed Brodie from caucus. Former B.C. Conservative Party Leader John Rustad said her removal was due to comments regarding residential schools.

“The privilege, and platform, of being a Conservative MLA comes with an expectation and responsibility to do the right thing — mocking former residential school students giving testimony, including testimony about child sex abuse by pedophiles, is beyond the pale,” Rustad said in a statement.

Rustad’s statement said that Brodie publicly mocked and belittled testimony from former residential school students.

The development hasn’t slowed down Brodie, who is continuing to go on the offensive against the NDP and “Reconciliation Industry activists.”

Brodie recently launched OneBC, “The BC Party For Normal People!”
