Vancouver Police's crime-fighting puppies given names

Dec 19 2017, 6:23 pm

When the Vancouver Police Department put out a call for help from Vancouver area classrooms to name the VPD’s newest and cutest crime-fighters, teachers and students came to the rescue!

With over 800 entries, members of the VPD Dog Squad had the difficult decision of determining what the most appropriate names for the two new German Shepherd puppies should be. The officers were provided a list of the names only, and had no information on the classes or schools who put the names forward.

The final names chosen were:

Griffin (sable puppy)

Chosen by: Ms. Upton’s Grade 4 class at Kerrisdale Elementary School

Maverick (black puppy)

Chosen by: Mr. Planta’s Grade 6 class at Vancouver College

There were many great names suggested, and the Vancouver Police Department and the Vancouver School Board want to thank students for taking part in the contest.

“I want to congratulate the students for picking the winning names in the VPD Name the Puppy contest. I have no doubt a great deal of thought and consideration went into these winning names,” says Vancouver School Board Chairperson Patti Bacchus.

Here is a sampling of some of the other names:
