Vancouver police are investigating a collision that has resulted in the death of a 78-year-old woman.

Around 8:30 pm on Christmas day, a pedestrian was crossing Kingsway Avenue at Earles Street in East Vancouver, when a car travelling north on Earles made a left turn onto Kingsway and hit the woman in the crosswalk.

The woman was knocked to the ground and is believed to have suffered a serious head injury. She was taken to hospital where she later died.

The driver, a 54-year-old Vancouver man, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the police investigation.

Alcohol and speed do not appear to be factors in the collision.

This is Vancouver’s 13th traffic related fatality in 2014, six of those collisions unfortunately took the life of a pedestrian.
